The Yellow Squirrel Collective

The Yellow Squirrel Collective aims to build a supportive community of graphic novel enthusiasts who learn and connect through storytelling.

The Yellow Squirrel is also the name of the graphic novel I've been working on for the past three years. It's a story about a brother who dies of an overdose and the sister who struggles to understand why.

It's my own story of the impact of violence and addiction. It explores resentments, self-hatred, and the power of community and family belief systems on mental health and our ability to survive and navigate the world.

Why The Yellow Squirrel?

My first memory of falling in love with art and colour - specifically the color yellow - happened when I was 5 years old. I had just finished colouring a picture of a squirrel in my kindergarden class. I didn't care about the colouring itself (it was messy), I just had an overwhelming experience of merging with the colour yellow. Like it was in me, not in the yellow crayon I was using.  I rushed to show everyone, but the responses were disappointing. I won't name names because who hasn't been critiqued for their artistic ability (or lack of) at an early age? It's a tradition that's passed down from one generation to the next. You have be "good" at art. You can't just feel good about what you make.

Discovering comics and continuing to draw and make art that pleases me has been a 50+ year journey. I hope to share what I've learned with you!

What was the name of Crayola yellow in 1969?

AI tells me it was Orange Yellow. I think that's the one that got me!
